The Smithsonian Enterprise Restoration Video

The Smithsonian released this awesome video of the restoration of the USS Enterprise filming miniature.  OK, not so miniature!  But a must watch!

This is a short film showing the process of the detail paint work on the restoration of original U.S.S. Enterprise miniature. The work was done between the 11th and the 23rd of April 2016 at the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy facility. The model is now on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.

Enjoy!

MACO Space Suit from Enterprise

MACO Space Suit

This suit was originally made for the motion picture "The Core" and later rented by the Enterprise Costume Department. Sadly the costume hasn't aged well and jumpsuit and the back pack have had considerable deterioration. Shoes, gloves etc. look fine. It still displays very well, there's no problem to the thick jumpsuit itself, just the outer layer.

If interested, contact me and I will pass it on to the seller, a well known Star Trek Prop, Costume & Auction member. He is asking $ 3,000.

Enterprise T'Pol Costumes For Sale

Darrin Cowger, one of the good guys in prop collecting, is selling a spectacular set of "Enterprise" T'Pol uniforms.  Their provenance is the It's A Wrap auctions and so you know this is real.  Here is the description:

Full T'POL (Season 1) spandex uniform (boot cuffs are the only part that are unfinished) and screen used jacket, screen used rank pip, belt and EM-33 Energy pistol holster from Season 1: Episode one:  "Broken Bow."  Belt has "Jolene" written on the back.  This uniform was originally sold by IAW and is referenced under IAW#5638.  This uniform comes with IAW certificate of authenticity and is in near perfect condition.   There is still "Special Effect Snow" in the pockets of this jacket from where T'Pol is blasted across the shuttlecraft pad (See Attached pics from Trekcore).  This is seriously a very nice costume and displays very well.  $4,950.00.

If you are interested, contact Darrin directly at darrincowger@yahoo.com.

The original IAW decsription:

STAR TREK: ENT “T'POL AWAY TEAM JACKET W/ UNFINISHED UNIFORM” A costume featured in “Broken Bow” the pilot episode of Star Trek: Enterprise for wear by Jolene Blalock in her portrayal of “T'Pol”. The costume is a form fitting Vulcan camouflage uniform with an affixed belt, a cold climate Vulcan jacket, a holster and two belts. The uniform is unfinished at the cuffs of the legs though this does not detract from the overall appearance of the costume. The jacket has an unfinished appearance on the inside, though it is complete, with an asymmetrical double front that clasps closed on thread loops, is copper colored and comes with two matching belts made from the same vinyl or PVC material. The pockets of the jacket and the inside folds retain special effects ‘snow’ used during production in scenes taking place on Rigel X. The holster is tough vacuum formed plastic with a military clip affixed to the inside, ‘Jolene’ is penned onto the inside, the holster is painted to match the Vulcan camouflage and is made to fit an EM-33 energy pistol (sold separately).

Original Enterprise Model Turns 49!

L-R: Richard C. Datin, Jr. Mel Keys, Vernon Sion

49 years ago today, on December 29th, 1964,  the original filming model of the U.S.S. Enterprise was delivered to the Howard Anderson Company. There, it would be used as the centerpiece for optical effects scenes to be included in the pilot episode of what was hoped to be a new television series, Star Trek.

Model maker Richard C. Datin, Jr. oversaw the efforts of model makers Mel Keys, Vernon Sion, and Volmer Jensen in constructing the 11-foot model from a 1-foot prototype Datin himself built.

The prototype and the larger model were based on the design created by legendary Star Trek production artist Walter M. “Matt” Jefferies.

Datin would later modify the model prior to its use during the filming of the original series’ first pilot, “The Cage", alter it again for the second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” and then again once the show sold to NBC and filming began on the series’ first season.

The model was donated to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in 1974.  Originally, it hung in one of the first-level galleries, where it remained until the mid-late 1980s.

The Starship Enterprise during its third Smithsonian restoration, December, 1991.

After the restoration, the Enterprise was displayed as part of a Star Trek exhibit in the mid 1990's. It is currently on display in the lower level of the museum’s main gift store.

The museum also maintains a blog, with two articles detailing the museum’s restoration of the model.  They are both short and worth a read.

The also Smithsonian maintains an information page about the model’s history.

Much thanks to Dayton Ward, writer of Star Trek: That Which Divides and Star Trek: From History’s Shadow for posting this information on his blog.  Please check out his books, which are throw backs to the Star Trek novels of the 80's/early 90's.
